Valve Wants The Steam Deck To Be Its New Steam Machines

Many years ago, Valve launched its Steam Machine initiative which was basically their attempt at making a console of their own, except that it would play PC games, so it’s kind of like a PC except it was designed specifically for gaming in the living room. The initiative also saw Valve work with other companies, like Alienware, who made their own Steam Machines.

It seems that this is a concept that Valve’s co-founder Gabe Newell is hoping that its new Steam Deck could adopt. Speaking to IGN in an interview, Newell was quoted as saying that he hopes that other PC makers could get on board with the Steam Deck and maybe make their own versions of it.

According to Newell, “Our view is, If we’re doing this right, that we’re going to be selling these in millions of units. And it’s clearly going to be establishing a product category that ourselves and other PC manufacturers are going to be able to participate in. And that’s going to have long-term benefits for us. So that’s sort of the frame in which we’re thinking about this.”

This would be a very different approach compared to what other console makers have done, but at the same time, it does open it up to more options for gamers.
